米勒提出了揭示由成功走向失败的四条主要“轨道”：

* 焦点轨道造就了谨小慎微、质量导向的手工艺人。把具有熟练工程师和经营无懈可击的组织变成了僵化的、迷恋于细节的补锅匠，企业保守的技术统治文化用完美的但却是不相干的东西疏远了顾客。

* 冒险轨道改变了成长导向、企业家式的创业者，把由富有想象力的领导和创造性策划与财务参谋人员所经营的公司转变为冲动的、贪婪的帝国主义者，手忙脚乱地扩张到他们一点也不懂的行业，严重滥用组织的资源。
