作者簡介

理查．桑內特Richard Sennett

在倫敦政經學院及哈佛大學教授城市研究，也是哥倫比亞大學資本主義與社會中心的資深研究員。在成為社會學家之前，對音樂有所涉獵。桑內特獲獎無數，包括獲頒2006年黑格爾人文與社會科學終身成就獎。三十年來，他在聯合國的贊助下主持都市發展專案，指引二十一世紀的城市發展。著有《再會吧！公共人》（The Fall of Public Man）、《職場啟示錄》（The Corrosion of Character）、《肉體與石頭》（Flesh and Stone）、《匠人》（The Craftsman）等書。

'a city is composed of different kinds of men; similar people cannot bring a city into existence'

People are stronger together than apart; thus in wartime, Athens sheltered a diverse range of tribes who fled the countryside; it also took in exiles who then remained in the city. Though their status was ever unresolved and ambiguous, these refugees brought new ways of thinking and new crafts to the city. Aristotle was also thinking about the virtues of complexity in politics; in a diverse milieu, men (in Aristotle'stime, only men)are obliged to understand different points of view inorder to govern the city...

At MIT, I had occasion to see Stadtluft macht frei takeamong a group of young architects from Shanghai. Their home citvepitomizes the urban explosion occurring throughout the develeping world today, a place expanding economically at a headlong rat, drawing young people from all over China into its orbit. Although my band of Shanghainese went home to their vilages or small townseach New Year, in the city they lett their local outlooks and habitsbehind. Some of the young male architects came out as gay; youngfemale architects delayed or refused to have a child-both sexes causing grief to those at home. When I introduced my charges to Stadtitmacht frei, they translated the phrase into Mandarin as ' wearing deferent hats.
